A Report about My Partner

My name is Tram Nguyen. I have a report about my partner. I interviewed her for about 15 minutes.

Her name is Huichen. She came from Taiwan. She told me that she likes to exercise with her husband every morning in a park near her house and come back home to eat breakfast. She does some chores in the house.

Her hobby is reading Chinese books, especially history books. Her most memorable event is when she climbed to the top of a high mountain in Taiwan and looked down feeling very scared. She told me that she wants to pass an interview to become a U.S. citizen.

She usually follows the news on TV. She wants to watch about her country and what happened at there. She believes her husband. When she wants to get a clear view of things talked about in the news, she always discusses with her husband. I don’t always believe news either. I think that some news is just speculation only and I am not sure whether it has happened or not.

Thank you for reading my report.

My Interview

My partner is Ngoc, who comes from Viet Nam. Her hobby is traveling all over the world. She said she and her husband want to make a lot of money to travel when they can. She also said she feels comfortable and happy when she goes to many foreign countries, because she can get more knowledge about the culture, traditions, customs, and things like that from there. Everyday, she follows the news on internet, especially the weather news, and she said she wants to make sure about the weather of the countries before she decides to go. On the other hand, she also likes the world news. She said she cannot travel if the war happens. It is difficult for her to travel to the countries where the war is happening. She usually finds some sources to get news from www.yahoo.com, or radio with AM 1290, a local Vietnamese radio station. When I asked her “who do you believe and do you think news is presented objectively especially when news from her home country is involved”, she said she just believes herself. And she only believes 50 % about the news, and she will find other sources which are related to that news. Because she said after she came to America, she has gotten a lot of differences about the political news from her country, which are not true. That is the reason why she wants to know news from her country from all different sources.

Interview with My Partner

This morning, I interviewed my partner, May, who is a beautiful younger girl and who came from China last year. She is interested in cooking and paying attention to fashion things. She often goes to nightclubs with her friends on weekends. When she was 18 years old, she got the first pay in her life. She recalled this as her most memorable event. She dreams to open a fashion shop in the future. Before this, she wants to become a fashion buyer and she always follows this kind of news.

Her interests also include world news, national news, and health news…etc. Besides, she told me that looking at fashion news every day is very important to her. She often goes to www.vogue.com because this website talks about fashion topics. She often reads magazines such as Vogue and EllE, which I think also regard to the same things.

When I ask her “who do you believe”, she said that she chooses to believe herself, because one thing always has two sides and people usually cannot objectively comment on both sides. I agree with her.

In my interview, he said he always follows the news, headlines or top stories, and weather forecast. He looks news on the internet using Google and listens to NPR before he goes to sleep every night. He likes to watch weather forecast, because he wants to know about everyday weather. He doesn’t like entertainment, and he thinks that is what young people are interested in. He never watches CNN news, because he doesn’t understand English very well. If important and serious news are discussed in the news, he believes himself. He doesn’t believe everything that he sees, and he only believes his own feelings.

Her interests include world news, local news, national news, headlines or top stories, entertainment, health, technology, education, business, traffic report, and weather forecast. Everyday she gets news from T.V, radio, and internet. Here are some sources she likes: CNN News, ABC News, Bloomberg News, and WWW.Yahoo.com. My Interview

My mane is Ngoc. My homework today is “My Interview”, which talks about my partner’s opinions to get news. My partner is Anh Ngo, Vietnamese. She likes shopping, seeing movies, and visiting her husband’s relatives. Her dream is to have a good job to buy a big house, and to save a lot of money to open a company in Vietnam.
She lives with her husband. They sometimes follow the news on TV about three times a week. She is interested in World news (especially political news), and local news (especially crime), and entertainment. Her favorite channel is CNN news, and she also likes to go on internet at www.yahoo.com too.
She just believes in herself. She told me “when I see some news about Viet Nam here, especially politics, I believe half and half”. Because almost people in US follow The Democratic Republic of Vietnam; but in fact in Viet Nam, the people follow The Socialist Republic of Vietnam. They have different political system, and only positive things not negative ones about themselves are talked about. So, she often discusses news with many people and follows many channels. I think she is right, because I am the same.

How Do You Stay Informed?

After studying the lesson on staying informed in our Side by Side book, we conducted classroom interviews. We found out that we stay informed in six ways: TV news, the newspaper, the radio, magazines, the Internet, and community meetings.

Some of our classmates follow the news more than others and we are interested in many things. For example, Hoa likes to know about local news in our community. Jingsen is interested in world news. Hien reads the Vietnamese newspaper to find jobs or look for an apartment. Behzad from Iran loves cars, so he looks for news about cars in magazines.

Where do we look for news? Yan Ling read the Chinese newspaper and goes online to Chinese news sites. Some Vietnamese students read the weekly Vietnamese paper called Thang Mo. Orawan, who is from Thailand reads the Milpitas Post. The TV news program mentioned most was CNN. Behzad likes to watch CNN for news about his country and world news. Dat enjoys going to the Voice of America website (VOA) to practice his English and read news in Special English.

An interview with Ja-Yong

By Yuji, Palo Alto Adult School ESL student
Ja-Yong, an engineer, came from Korea. She follows the news via Internet sites such as Joonmedia and NAVER because she feels it’s very convenient. Joonmedia is a Korea news broadcasting site. NAVER is a directory site with many kinds of genre like Yahoo! in the US. Especially, she likes to read entertainment news. Recently, she was interested in news about Korea’s president coming to the US to talk with President Obama. About the whole news, she believes most news sources, but she doesn’t agree with some opinions in the news. And she thinks that her perspectives are being represented.

My Classmate

My classmate’s name is Anh Lam. She is Vietnamese. Her interests include reading, shopping, and surfing the internet. She read Vietnamese books before going to bed and she goes shopping very weekend with her sister. She follows news everyday. In the evening she watches TV (channel 26-5, a Vietnamese channel) for news in the world or local news, and in the morning before going to school she surfs the internet at www.yahoo.com for news about Vietnam. So she has a lot of news to discuss in her free time. She gets information from a lot of sources and she thinks not everything is presented objectively, and she usually makes her own decisions on what to believe. The most memorable event for her was the day she left Vietnam with her family to go to the US. On that day, it was raining heavily, which made her very sad. And now, she is living with her younger brother and her mom. So she wants to have her own house and own a small business for herself.

Posted by Phuong Nguyen

My friend Ping Wang

Ping Wang is a Chinese woman. She is 48 years old. Every week, she spends her fee time shopping and she is good at cooking.
The most memorable event in her life is the day when her sons were born. When I asked her “How about your wedding?”, she said “I can forgot the day I got married but I never forget the day my sons were born.” She is a great mother!
There are five people in her family: Ping Wang, her husband, two sons and a daughter. They have lived in a small house together for a long time. Her dream is to buy a big house for her family and to help her daughter become a famous musician.
Every morning, she checks the news from computer at www.epochtimes.com and sometimes from some Chinese newspapers or through her friends. She follows the news and she is interested in local news and world news. She didn’t believe anything about news when she lived in China, and now in America she can believe what the news says and sometimes she still doesn’t believe. She would rather believe in herself.
She thinks her perspectives are being presented. Sometimes in some Chinese news, she doesn’t agree with some things so she comments in Chinese but she never gives feedback to world news because she thinks that maybe she can’t understand the news clearly, and she might misunderstand it. Another reason is that her English is poor to write and explain her ideas.

habit of news reading .

Elizabeth is from Senegal and she has been living here for 2 years. Everyday Elizabeth spends some times to watch ABC, CNN and KTVU. She is most interested in

My other partner Sam who is from Iran. Sam told me that he watches news from Iranian Night News, ABC, BBC, KQED and VOA every evening. Because Sam used to be a physics teacher and always has a passion for art, he not only cares about political issues, but also he is interested in science and art. Sam said that watching and reading English news is a good way to improve English.
